Child Protection / Abuse in the Church,  Surviving a Childhood of Neglect and Abuse

People are hoping to find you alive …

I cringed when I read the following poem by my friend and fellow Christian attorney, David Hogue:

Traffic

Honestly? I had to force myself to finish it because this topic is so horrific that it would take all of my focus in life if I let it.

I also had to force myself to not give in to all of my temptations related to excuses for inactivity because this evil is just so overwhelmingly huge that I would constantly close my eyes and turn my head away from it if I gave in to my own devices.

  • Can I stop child trafficking? No.
  • Can I give money every month to help in the battle? Yes.
  • If every professing Christian gave $20/month, could millions of children be rescued? Yes.

If you’re interested, the entity working in this area that my family prays for and gives to with greatest frequency is International Justice Mission. I also have a number of articles and organizations listed in my Child Protection / Abuse in the Church blogs to help you to gain wisdom on the terrible truth that sexual abuse also happens in the church. (In fact, the second most likely place that your child will be sexually assaulted is church youth group!)

I’m sure there are other excellent organizations out there–and I bet you could even find one that lines up with your particular geographical or theological convictions on this topic.

The key is to do something. Today!

No more waiting around for that fictitious, idealized day when your time and finances are perfectly aligned and you can easily and comfortably make some sort of massive donation with astronomically huge ramifications. No. Seriously. No. Today is the day. Make a decision. Stand against evil. Fight for the good.

As a woman who probably came within four feet of being sex trafficked when I was just a child, David’s poem could have been my life story. Let’s work together today to save even one child from this horror. She’s worth it.

Your grateful friend,
Tara B.
