    Beach Day 2010

Well. WHEW! Another “Beach Day” at co-op has come and gone and I’m so grateful that we made through all of the activities and festivities with only a tiny bit of tears (during the “SCUBA diving” adventure) and NO bandaids required. Hooray! I still think I am pretty much the least qualified to ever try to corral small children and have fun. But like so many opportunities to serve in the church, we just do our best, and have to entrust the rest to the Lord. I think that overall the kids had fun, so that’s great: One of the moms made DELISH yogurt-banana-frozen-treat-thingies and another made TURTLE-shaped jello jigglers…

    Dream Not of Noble Service

“Dream not of noble service elsewhere wrought, The simple duty that awaits thy hand Is God’s voice uttering a divine command; Life’s common duties build what saints have thought. In wonder — workings of some bush aflame  Men look for God, and fancy Him concealed; But in earth’s common things He stands revealed, While grass and stars and flowers spell out His name.” (The Quiet Things, by Minot Judson Savage, 1882) HT: QuietResting

Striving to FEEL More Loving by ACTING More Loving (Faking? Faith?)

Fred and I continue to muddle our way through that exhausting and challenging-for-marriages season of life called “parenting small children.” Of course we love our girls! And deep down, we know that we love one another. But lately, it’s sure been hard to FEEL very loving toward each other. We’re sort of in some communication ruts that lend themselves to misunderstandings, hurts, and the easy-to-fall-into fight or flight responses to conflict. No fun. So this week, I said to Fred: “I have an idea. How about if we just FAKE IT for one week. You know. Act toward each other like we USED to act toward each other—all lovey-dovey, best-friendy,…

Seeking a Life and World to Come

“The human heart has hidden treasures, In secret kept, in silence sealed; The thoughts, the hopes, the dreams, the pleasures, Whose charms were broken if revealed. And days may pass in gay confusion, And nights in rosy riot fly, While, lost in Fame’s or Wealth’s illusion, The memory of the Past may die. But, there are hours of lonely musing, Such as in evening silence come, When, soft as birds their pinions closing, The heart’s best feelings gather home. Then in our souls there seems to languish A tender grief that is not woe; And thoughts that once wrung groans of anguish, Now cause but some mild tears to flow.…

    How Do You Overcome?

‘It is no coincidence that the problems of the seven churches in Revelation 2 and 3 are followed by a majestic vision of Him who sits on the throne in (ch. 4) and the Lamb who was slain (ch. 5). The magnificent picture of the sovereign, holy God of the universe sitting on the throne and the Lamb at His right hand follows seven very practical, specific letters. Indeed, the vision of God in chapters 4 and 5 is the answer to the problems posed in chapters 2 and 3. Each of the churches is called to overcome.  But how do you do that? The answer is found in chapters…

    Wrongly Accused? Wrongly Convicted?

Oh. Tears. Again. How quick I am to give in to resentment and bitterness when people attribute wrong motives to me; misjudge me; presume the worst about me. How would I respond if they didn’t just wrongfully accuse me? They convicted me and then put me in jail for 29 years? Oh oh oh. I pray that I would be like this man:   Wrongly Convicted Man Goes Free (HT: TakeYourVitaminZ)
